Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson Resigns as MP
Following allegations of lying to Parliament about lockdown parties that he attended, Boris Johnson has resigned as a Member of Parliament. Johnson has stepped down after receiving a recommendation from a parliamentary committee that investigated the scandal known as Partygate.
Johnson Denies Allegations
In a statement, Johnson denied the allegations from the committee regarding the illegal parties that occurred during the coronavirus lockdown in Downing Street. The committee had recommended a ten-day suspension for the former prime minister, which Johnson disagreed with.
Accusations of Bias
Johnson accused the committee, which included members of his Conservative Party, of driving an "anti-democratic" agenda and demonstrating "outrageous bias" in their decision to force him out of Parliament.
Honoured to Have Served
Johnson expressed sadness over leaving Parliament, at least temporarily, and spoke about how it had been an honour to serve as both a Member of Parliament and the Mayor of London. His resignation also means a by-election will be held in his constituency in north-west London amidst poor polling results for the Conservative Party.
Investigation into Lying to Parliament
The Privileges Committee sent a letter to Johnson that provided him with a two-week deadline for response. The committee's investigation focuses on whether Johnson lied to Parliament about lockdown parties held in Downing Street among government employees.
Downing Street Parties in Violation of COVID-19 Regulations
Despite COVID-19 regulations, government employees gathered in Downing Street for multiple parties with music and alcohol. Both Johnson and the current Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, were fined for attending one of the events.
