Zverev to Play in Halle after Thigh Injury
Alexander Zverev plans to compete at the upcoming grass tournament in Halle, Westphalia, after suffering a thigh injury during the French Open.
"It's not an injury of six months, but of one week. Then maybe you have to be a bit more careful, but I will play in Halle," said the tennis gold medalist in an interview with "Sport Bild." However, Zverev had to cancel his involvement in the Stuttgart tournament earlier this week.
The 26-year-old suffered a slight thigh strain in his last training session before the French Open semifinal defeat against Norway's Casper Ruud. Zverev lost the match 3-6, 4-6, 0-6.
Zverev aims to train again in Halle starting from Thursday, June 15, 2023, before the tournament starts on Saturday, ahead of the upcoming Wimbledon Grand Slam (July 3-16). "It's also good that the body has a little rest," said Zverev. He added that he is handling the injury well: "Nothing is broken; it is actually just a strain."
Wimbledon Ambitions
Zverev remains optimistic about his chances at the Wimbledon tournament, despite the difficult challenge ahead. He has never advanced past the fourth round in London. "I'm too big for the surface," he said. "When I'm there, I still want to win. I'm not going there like a clown and taking it as a training week. But realistically, it's harder for me than the other Grand Slams."
