Report: France's NBA Top Talent Wembanyama Won't Participate in World Cup
Exceptional talent Victor Wembanyama, according to a report from the sports newspaper "L'Équipe," will not compete in the upcoming Basketball World Cup for France.
The newspaper cited a conversation with the 19-year-old in Texas. Wembanyama reportedly found the decision difficult but said it was "irrevocable." The World Cup will take place from August 25 to September 10 in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia.
According to the report, Wembanyama also emphasized that it was his decision and that his future employer, the San Antonio Spurs from the NBA, had given him the choice. Before making his decision, he reportedly consulted with his closest circle, doctors, and his coach. However, Wembanyama also announced that he wants to win as many titles as possible with the national team. "But I think it's a necessary sacrifice," he said regarding his withdrawal from the World Cup.
Wembanyama was recently selected by the Spurs as expected with the first overall pick in the NBA draft.
