Nawalny on Mercenary Uprising: No One Supported Putin

Imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin lacked popular support in the face of the recent mercenary uprising. Navalny's team stated on Tuesday via social media that "At the moment when military columns drove to occupy Moscow, no one stood up to defend Putin." They added, "There was no national unity around him." Navalny suggested that Putin is apparently even less popular among the population than the insurgent leader of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin.

Prigozhin's mercenaries, who had fought alongside the regular Russian army in Ukraine for months, escalated a long-standing power struggle within the Russian military leadership. The Wagner fighters first occupied the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don and then continued their march towards Moscow. Their practically unhindered advance was halted only around 200 kilometers from the Russian capital. Later, Putin claimed in a televised address that Russian society had proven its united rejection of the uprising.
