Germany's Defense Minister Boris Pistorius Addresses Ukraine Crisis: "These Are Decisive Moments Now"
Pistorius: "These are Crucial Moments Now"
Berlin - SPD Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has commented on the war in Ukraine while on his way to the United States. "I rely on the major offensive, on the counteroffensive, and everything else will fall into place," he said in an interview with ZDF's "Morgenmagazin."
"This is most likely a crucial year, these are crucial months now," he said. "That's why Germany recently provided a significant support package worth 2.7 billion euros." This support will have a lasting impact on Ukraine. Is Boris Pistorius a good choice as Defense Minister?
According to Pistorius, Germany is now the second-largest supporter of Ukraine after the United States. When asked about Germany's lag in meeting the NATO target of defense spending amounting to two percent of gross domestic product, Pistorius pointed out that the majority of NATO member states have also not yet reached this goal. However, he acknowledged that this is a weak consolation and cannot satisfy Germany itself.
Pistorius further stated that it is clear that the government aims to achieve the target. The goal has recently been documented in the newly presented National Security Strategy. "We clearly commit to the two percent goal and we will achieve it," said Pistorius. The funds for this will come from the individual plan 14 in the federal budget - the budget for the Ministry of Defense - with the assistance of the special fund for the Bundeswehr. The latter can be included as it exclusively covers military expenditures.
