Sandu expresses condolences to families of shooting victims at the airport

President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, expressed condolences to the families of the Border Police officer and airport security service personnel who were killed on Friday due to a shooting incident by a foreigner.

"Today, a serious incident occurred at the airport, during which a foreign citizen, who was denied entry to the country by the Moldovan authorities, shot and killed two individuals - a border guard and an airport security service employee. Our heartfelt condolences to the families and relatives of the deceased - losing loved ones is an enormous pain for families," Sandu wrote on her Facebook page.

According to her, it is a sad day for the entire country. The President also noted that state institutions have been put on alert, and the police and law enforcement agencies have been mobilized throughout Moldova.

Earlier on Friday, the press service of the police in Chisinau reported to RIA Novosti that an unknown individual opened fire at the capital's airport, and passengers were evacuated, with flights temporarily postponed. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the shooter was a foreigner who was denied entry into the country, and as a result of the shooting, two people died. The shooter has been detained and required medical assistance.

Flight operations and commercial activities at the airport are currently suspended. The police have ensured the safety of citizens in the vicinity of the airport. The country's leadership has been urgently informed of the situation.
