Fatal Accident Claims Lives of at least 50 People in Kenya

A serious accident near the Kenyan city of Londiani has claimed the lives of at least 50 people. The recovery efforts are ongoing but are hindered by heavy rainfall.

A heavy truck accident in western Kenya has resulted in the deaths of at least 50 people. Over 30 people have been injured, according to local police chief Geoffrey Mayek, as reported by the AFP news agency.

The truck collided with several other vehicles and market traders, as reported by the police. The incident occurred at a well-known accident-prone area in the Kericho district near the city of Londiani, approximately 200 kilometers northwest of the capital, Nairobi.

Frequent Deadly Traffic Accidents on Kenyan Roads

According to eyewitnesses, the truck veered off the main road and collided with several vehicles before running over pedestrians and traders, as reported by media outlets. Photos showed vehicle wrecks completely destroyed beyond recognition.

The Red Cross reported that rescue operations were interrupted due to heavy rainfall. There are still people trapped inside the wreckage.

Serious accidents are frequent on Kenyan roads. According to the national traffic authority, 4,690 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in the East African country last year.
