RB Leipzig Sporting Director Comments on Dominik Szoboszlai's Move to FC Liverpool
Official Transfer: FC Liverpool Signs Leipzig's Szoboszlai
Leipzig - Dominik Szoboszlai is leaving DFB-Pokal winners RB Leipzig and joining FC Liverpool. On Sunday, both clubs officially announced the transfer after the Hungarian midfielder passed his medical examination in England on Saturday. Liverpool exercised the buyout clause just before the deadline on Friday evening and transferred the fixed transfer fee of around 70 million euros to RB Leipzig. As a result, the 22-year-old Hungarian national player, who still had a contract with the Saxony-based Bundesliga club until June 30, 2026, becomes the most expensive transfer in the history of the German cup winners.
RB Leipzig Sporting Director Comments on Szoboszlai's Departure
"Of course, we would have liked to have continued with Dominik into the new season and the coming years. However, he has decided to take the path to England and join FC Liverpool - and thus an absolute international top team. This is once again an honor for us as a club and for the work being done here to elevate young players to the next level," said RB Leipzig's Sporting Director, Max Eberl. Previously, Keita and Nkunku were the most expensive departures.
Szoboszlai Completes Move to Liverpool, Becomes Leipzig's Costliest Departure
Szoboszlai, who arrived in Leipzig in the summer of 2021 from RB Salzburg for 22 million euros and flourished under coach Marco Rose, had repeatedly avoided making a clear commitment to Leipzig in recent weeks and had consistently pushed for a transfer. Rose had commented on the buyout clause before the cup win, saying, "There's nothing you can do about a buyout clause, but I'm very relaxed." In total, Szoboszlai made 91 appearances in the RB Leipzig jersey and scored 20 goals. He won the cup twice with Leipzig.
Bundesliga's International Standing: Where Does It Rank?
Previously, Naby Keita, who moved to FC Liverpool in 2018, and Christopher Nkunku, who joined FC Chelsea after the last season, were considered Leipzig's most expensive departures, with transfer fees of around 60 million euros. The sum for Szoboszlai, of which a considerable part is expected to go as training compensation to his former clubs, could soon be surpassed as Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol is also set to leave the club prematurely due to a buyout clause. Champions League winners Manchester City have a keen interest in the center-back and are said to have already made an offer of 90 million euros. RB Leipzig is likely to insist on the value of the buyout clause of 110 million euros, which will only take effect from 2024. If the transfer happens, the Croatian would become the most expensive defender in the world.
