Messi will receive a salary from Barcelona until 2025
Spanish football club Barcelona will continue to pay a salary to Argentine national team forward Lionel Messi until 2025, according to Barcelona's president, Joan Laporta, as quoted by La Vanguardia.
Messi has played for Barcelona for the majority of his career, from 2005 to 2021.
"He had a salary deferral agreed with the previous board of directors. The payments will end in 2025. He is being paid unwaveringly. The amount is included in the wage fund, but it can be interpreted differently. Relations with the league have improved, so the compensation payments will not affect financial fair play, and this is good news," said Laporta.
In the summer, Messi moved to the MLS club Inter Miami, whose ownership group includes former England national team captain David Beckham. Previously, French club Paris Saint-Germain announced Messi's departure at the end of the season due to the expiration of his contract. He became a PSG player in the summer of 2021, joining the Parisian club as a free agent from Barcelona. The Argentine is a World Cup champion, Copa America winner, and seven-time recipient of the Ballon d'Or.
