US to Decide on Sending Cluster Munitions to Kyiv This Week, Reports Say
CBS: US May Approve Shipment of Cluster Munitions to Ukraine This Week
US authorities are expected to make a decision this week regarding the approval of supplying cluster munitions to Ukraine, according to CBS, citing unnamed government sources.
According to the report, the discussion on this matter aims to meet Ukraine's high demand for ammunition amid a counteroffensive that is "progressing slower than expected." As noted by one of the channel's sources, the area of impact of such projectiles is approximately five times larger than that of conventional munitions.
Cluster munitions are prohibited by an international convention ratified by 123 countries, excluding the United States and Ukraine.
Foreign Policy magazine previously reported that a number of US legislators urged President Biden to send cluster munitions to Ukraine to assist Kyiv in its counteroffensive. Former Special Assistant to the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Valeriy Zaluzhny, stated that the use of cluster munitions would allow for a smaller quantity to be utilized as they are expended at a slower rate.
Earlier, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia, Laura Cooper, stated that the US does not supply Ukraine with advanced dual-purpose munitions to avoid conflicting with restrictions on the delivery of cluster bombs.
