Ukrainian refugees in the Polish city of Poznan have unexpectedly pleaded for mercy, reaching out to Governor Michal Zelinski with a request to allow them to remain in one of the city's dormitories, according to Wyborcza newspaper.

According to the publication, due to poor conditions in the dormitory located on Warsaw Street, the authorities terminated the contract with the building owner. All residents are required to vacate the premises by the end of July this year.

The refugees claim that after renovations, the living conditions in the dormitory have significantly improved. Reluctant to leave their place of residence, they have turned to the authorities for help. "What if they take us somewhere far away? We will have to start all over again," said a resident of the dormitory named Tatiana.

In their petition, the refugees indicated that most of the alternative places offered to them are located outside of Poznan. As reported by the newspaper, they wrote, "Please, spare us." However, the authorities responded to their plea with indifference.

"Our country provides you with humanitarian assistance, regardless of the location. If you are seeking support or safety, it is not for us to provide," said Waldemar Paternoga, Deputy Director of the local Department of Security and Crisis Management, in response to the residents. In addition, when one of the refugees complained about their children having to change schools for the third time in a year, the official simply replied that Polish children also face similar challenges.

According to Polish authorities, there are currently 950,000 Ukrainian refugees remaining in the country, with a total of 2.3 million Ukrainians residing there.
