Indonesian Man Rescued from Captivity by Employer in Moscow

In Moscow, an Indonesian citizen who claimed to be held in "captivity" by his employer has been freed. The Moscow police released an undocumented worker from Indonesia after he posted a video on social media pleading for help from the apartment where his Russian employer had locked him up, according to the Indonesian portal Detik.

According to the publication, Rahmat Kurniawan Abadi had been working illegally in Russia since October 2022. In May 2023, he moved to Moscow, where he changed jobs several times through the same agent.

Eventually, the police became aware of the video posted by Abadi, in which he claimed that his employer was holding him "captive" and locking him up in a shelter apartment in the Butovo district. According to the publication, the police immediately freed the foreigner, interrogated the employer, and contacted the Indonesian Embassy in Moscow. "The police are also considering a case of immigration violation committed by Rahmat. Currently, Rahmat is in an immigration detention center in Sakharovo (65 kilometers from the center of Moscow) awaiting deportation," the press release published on the Indonesian diplomatic mission's website stated.

The embassy clarified that they continue to monitor the compliance with the rights of their fellow countryman and the deportation schedule.

The case of Rahmat Kurniawan Abadi highlights the issue of undocumented workers and the potential for exploitation and abuse they face. Many individuals from developing countries seek employment opportunities in countries like Russia, often facing challenges such as language barriers, unfamiliarity with local laws, and lack of legal protection.

While it is important to address immigration violation cases, it is equally crucial to ensure that the rights and well-being of undocumented workers are protected. This incident serves as a reminder for authorities to enhance efforts in combating illegal employment practices and providing support for vulnerable individuals.

The Indonesian Embassy's involvement in monitoring the situation and ensuring the deportation process is carried out appropriately demonstrates the importance of diplomatic collaboration in cases involving foreign nationals. Such cooperation between countries is vital in protecting the rights of their citizens abroad and addressing any issues they may encounter.

It is hoped that this incident will serve as a wake-up call for both employers and authorities to prioritize the welfare and rights of foreign workers. Efforts should be made to create a safe and fair working environment for all individuals, regardless of their immigration status.

As the story of Rahmat Kurniawan Abadi unfolds, it is essential for society as a whole to reflect on the treatment of undocumented workers and strive for a more inclusive and just society that respects the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their nationality or legal status.
